COMPETITION Europe

Looking for Young and Innocent critics

by

Young and Innocent – whose name is taken from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1937 classic – is a web-based competition of film essays and reviews which was launched in Italy in 2003. Its ninth edition is special in that, for the first time, it is open to all European Union citizens aged between 18 and 28.

Cineuropa has teamed up with this initiative of the Turin Cultural Cooperation Centre and Italian online magazine Effettonotte. The competition is open to submissions from March 1- June 30, 2011 on its website.

For this special edition of the competition, the organisers have put the emphasis on European cinema. The articles must be written in English, French, Italian or Spanish and a jury comprising journalists from the editorial teams at Cineuropa and Effettonotte will choose a selection of texts to be published on their respective media platforms throughout the duration of the competition.

Young and Innocent is divided into three categories:

In-deep Europe: short essays (under 9,000 characters) on works from European film history. This can be comparative studies between film and other arts, essays on one or more films, or even on one or more scenes from the same film.
Cult Europe: articles about a "cult" title from European film history.
Reviews Europe: reviews of films released in Europe during the 2010-2011 season.

There will be only one winner in each category. The prize will be a return trip to Brussels (Belgium), with planned activities including a tour of the European Parliament and Cineuropa’s editorial offices.
