The Gijón International Film Festival, in the Spanish region of Asturias, has recently unveiled portions of the main programme of its 45th edition, which runs from November 22-December 1.

The official section includes 20 titles, seen in major international showcases earlier this year but screening in Spain for the very first time. European talent is represented by 13 productions or co-productions.

Part of the contingent comes straight from the Croisette: Austrian competition entry Import/Export [trailer] by Ulrich Seidl (see news) and three French productions shown in Cannes' sidebar sections – Serge Bozon's France [trailer] (see news), Nicolas Klotz's Heartbeat Detector [trailer] and Mia Hansen-Löve's debut All is Forgiven [trailer, film focus] (see Focus).
Ben X [trailer, film focus] by Nic Balthazar (see interview with producer Peter Bouckaert) and Ex Drummer [trailer] by Koen Mortier (see news) are the two Belgian Flemish-speaking films on the slate, which continues with Irish/UK documentary Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten [trailer] by Julien Temple (news), the UK's Hallam Foe [trailer] by David Mackenzie (see news), Denmark's Ghosts of Cité Soleil by Asger Leth, Argentinean/French/German title El Otro [trailer] by Ariel Rotter (see news) and Mexican/UK/Canadian co-production Cochochi by Israel Cárdenas and Laura Amelia Guzmán.

Spanish cinema is represented by Pere Portabella’s The Silence Before Bach, recently shown in Venice (see news), and Unas fotos en la ciudad de Sylvia by José Luis Guerín (interview), an experimental photo-documentary whose concept and narrative are, despite its title, separate from his recent film feature En la ciudad de Sylvia [trailer]. Screening out of competition, the film is vying for the Non-Fiction and Documentary Award.

Parallel to the official section, Gijón has also programmed three retrospectives on the works of talented young directors Pawel Pawlikowski, Danielle Arbid and Carlos Reygadas.
