Quiet Chaos snags 18 David nominations

The 2008 David di Donatello Awards are looking to reconcile arthouse and mainstream cinema say the organizers of Italy’s top film honours, this year at their 52nd edition. Thus the most popular personalities of the big screen (Massimo Boldi, Giorgio Panariello and others) have been invited to present the awards to the winners on the evening of April 18 at the Auditorium della Conciliazione in Rome (and airing on prime time on Rai Due).

, directed by Antonello Grimaldi and starring Nanni Moretti, picked up the most nominations (18). It will vie for Best Film against Days and Clouds [+see also:

(five nominations), the first feature film by Giorgio Diritti. The latter is an independent production (the crew and lead actors were paid through a co-production deal that gave them shares of the film) that found theatrical distribution only through alternative circuits.

Domenico Procacci’s Fandango proves itself one of the country’s most active production companies with 30 nominations (between Quiet Chaos, The Right Distance and Fabrizio Bentivoglio’s feature debut Lascia perdere Johnny).

Other David awards to be presented on April 18 include Best Documentary, Best Short Film and the Young David, the latter which is chosen by a jury of 6,000 high school students. The nominations for Best EU Film are: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days [+see also:

. The Best Foreign Film will be chosen from Across the Universe, Into the Wild, In the Valley of Elah, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood.

To celebrate Italian cinema, which this year had great results in terms of admissions and box office, four special David awards will be presented this year. One will go to Italian cinema overall and will be received by Giancarlo Giannini and stored at the National Film Centre. The others will go to Luigi Magni (who just turned 80), Carlo Verdone for his 30-year career and Gabriele Muccino for the success he is achieving in the United States.
