Surprise winner
The Girl by the Lake [
trailer] swept the David di Donatello awards, taking home 10 statuettes, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Debut Director for
Andrea Molaioli (40), who beat out his two teachers, Nanni Moretti and Carlo Mazzacurati, for whom he previous worked as AD.
As predicted, Best Actor went to the film’s
Toni Servillo.
The Girl by the Lake also picked up Best Screenplay, Producer, Editing, Cinematography, Sound Design and Special Effects.

The awards favourite with 18 nominations, Antonello Grimaldi’s
Quiet Calm [trailer, film focus], had to make due with three wins: Best Supporting Actor (
Alessandro Gassman), Best Score and Best Original Song ("L'amore trasparente" by Ivano Fossati).
Silvio Soldini’s
Days and Clouds [
trailer] proved successful for its female stars: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress went respectively to
Margherita Buy and Alba Rohrwacher.
I Vicerè [

Roberto Faenza won four Davids: Best Production Design, Costume Design, Make-Up and Hair.
Lastly, the Best Film from the European Union went to
Sam Garbarski’s
