by

- The most important cinema event for Spanish cinema has announced the titles of eight selections for its official competition section

The annual appointment with Spanish cinema, the Malaga Festival, which this year turns sixteen, has announced the names of some of the films to take up the official section of the competition. As usual, the queen category of the competition, which will take place on April 20-27, stands out for its variety in terms of genres and productions, from well-known figures, to newcomers, comedies to dramas.

Among the eight films announced is the Spanish Portuguese coproduction Diamantes negros [+see also:

, directed by Miguel Alcantud (Cartagena, 1971). The diamonds the title refers to are the African children brought to Europe as young footballers, often through immoral means, and with aims tied more to money-making than securing a good future. By denouncing this practice, the film compares it to the slave trade.

The story of Diamantes negros, written by Alcantud himself, tells the story of Amadou and Moussa, who are noticed in Mali by a talent scout and brought to Madrid to win. They undertake a journey between Spain, Portugal and Northern Europe during which time they witness behind the scenes on-goings of this sovereign sport.

This production by Italian Carlo D’Ursi for his company Potenza Producciones based in Madrid as well as Portuguese Fado Filmes has benefitted from the help of Eurimages, the ICAA and the Ibermedia programme, as well as support from the Voces Foundation. Its international agent is Latido Films.

The cast is led by young Setigui Diallo and Hamidou Samake in the roles of the African children, around which agents and characters gravitate, each with their own interest - played by Guillermo Toledo, Carlo D’Ursi and Carlos Bardem.
