Antonio Monda is the new artistic director of the Rome International Film Festival that will this year celebrate its tenth edition (and will change its name to Festa del Cinema). The official announcement was made today at the end of the meeting of the Rome Film Foundation’s Board of Directors consisting of the new president Piera Detassis (representing the Municipality of Rome – read the news) and by Laura Delli Colli (representing the Lazio Region), Giancarlo Cremonesi (Chamber of Commerce), Carlo Fuortes (Musica per Roma) and Roberto Cicutto (Istituto Luce Cinecittà).

Antonio Monda, born in 1962, teaches at the New York University Film and Television Department. Author of novels and essays, he was behind some important retrospectives at the MoMA, the Solomon Guggenheim Museum, the Lincoln Centre, including those on Ermanno Olmi, Michael Cimino, Vittorio Gassman, Anna Magnani, Federico Fellini, Dante Ferretti, Neo-realism and great directors of photography. He is the creator, along with Richard Pena and Giorgio Gosetti, of “Open Roads”, the key Italian film festival that’s held each year at the New York Lincoln Centre.

Monda, who is filling Marco Müller's shoes, has already collaborated with the Rome Film Festival: in fact, an idea of his and of Mario Sesti brought about A Journey into American Cinema. This is a series of events organized as part of the Rome Film Festival with a number of extraordinary stars from the global cinema scene, including Francis Ford Coppola, the Coen brothers, David Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, John Landis, Tim Burton and Terrence Malick.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors also nominated today the new executive director, university professor and essayist Lucio Argano, currently president of the MiBACT Theatre Commission. An expert in culture management, Argano was Project Manager of Perugia 2019, organisational director of the Teatro Popolare in Rome (where he began his career) and of the  Romaeuropa Festival and, from 2007 to 2012, he had already managed the Rome International Film Festival as the general coordination manager.
