11/12/2015 - Five titles in competition and three special selections have been unveiled, which mainly represent North America

Following the announcement of its opening film, Hail, Cesar! [+see also:

film profile] by the Coen brothers (read the article), which will be screened out of competition, the Berlin Film Festival continues to reveal the titles in the selection of its 66^th edition, which will unspool from 11-21 February 2016.

So far we know the identity of five of the contenders for the Golden Bear, featuring among which are the names of Michael Grandage (with his feature debut, Genius [+see also:

film profile], toplined by Colin Firth, Jude Law and Nicole Kidman), Vincent Perez (Alone in Berlin [+see also:

film profile], with Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson, Daniel Brühl and Mikael Persbrandt), Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special), Alex Gibney (the documentary Zero Days) and Quebecois director Denis Côté (Boris sans Béatrice, starring such names as Denis Lavant), who already won an award at Berlin two years ago for Vic + Flo Saw a Bear.

The three films announced so far for the Special Screenings are all documentary titles, including the latest opus by Michael Moore (Where To Invade Next), the new film by the director of Twenty Feet from Stardom, Morgan Neville (The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble), and a biographical portrait of author John Berger co-directed by actress and former chair of the Berlin jury Tilda Swinton (The Seasons in Quincy: Four Portraits of John Berger).

For now, North America is hogging the limelight, but the balance between this and the other continents should be re-established as subsequent announcements are made.
