Coira improvises in new film starring Tosar

by Sergio Ríos Pérez

Coira improvises in new film starring Tosar08/04/2009 - Six stories, 24 characters, one day and no less than 18 meals, including breakfasts, lunches and dinners. These are the ingredients of Galician director Jorge Coira’s new and unusual project, 18 Meals, whose nine-day shoot wrapped up on March 20. The film has now entered the editing phase, which will last until October.

The most impressive aspect of the film’s production process was the emphasis on improvisation, which allowed the actors and director to give shape to each of the stories in the screenplay without rehearsing scenes beforehand. Moreover, Coira used four HD digital cameras that shot simultaneously, requiring precise coordination between the cast and crew.

As expected, one of the film’s strong points is the cast, headed by two-time Goya award-winner Luis Tosar (Mondays in the Sun [trailer], Take My Eyes [trailer]) alongside acclaimed actors Esperanza Pedreño, María Vázquez, Cristina Brondo, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Víctor Clavijo, Juan Carlos Vellido, María Bouzas, Xosé Barato and Camila Bossa.

18 Meals is co-produced by Fernanda del Nido for Tic Tac Producciones, Farruco Castroman and Tosar for Zircozine (who on April 8 will launch Al Final del Camino [trailer], distributed by Warner Bros) and Hugo Castro Fau for Argentina’s Lagarto Cine. The title is scheduled for release in 2010.
