07/04/2010 - The FFA (German film regulating body) allocated €15.7m in annual automatic support grants to the producers, distributors and short films that enjoyed the most success commercially and culturally in 2009. This success is measured according to a points system, which takes into account the number of admissions garnered by the films, as well as awards and festival selections.
For the fifth year running, Constantin triumphed in the two main Tiger Industry categories: Best Producer and Best Distributor. On the production side, 12 films (including Pope Joan [trailer], Männersache [trailer] and Vicky the Viking [trailer]) earned the company €2m in funding.
Neunte Babelsberg Film came second with €689,000 for The Reader [trailer], followed by Wiedemann & Berg with €599,000 in automatic support for Men In the City [trailer].
The best-ranking productions are Vicky the Viking with €1.5m in funding, followed by Rabbit Without Ears 2 [trailer] and The Reader. Last year’s best-performing auteur film is The White Ribbon [trailer, film focus], produced by X-Filme. In total, automatic support for production amounted to €12m.
On the distribution side, Constantin received €854,000 for 16 titles. In second position is Warner Bros. Entertainment with €432,000 for 12 films, and in third place Walt Disney with €287,000 for three titles.
For the second year, the FFA also awarded funding to short films: €527,000 was shared out among 51 titles.
