Molaioli looks at Parmalat crash in Il Gioiellino

Andrea Molaioli is currently in Acqui Terme in the Piedmont region, on the set of his second film, after The Girl by the Lakes [+see also:

, a loose reconstruction of Parmalat’s 2003 financial crash (and bankruptcy), to the tune of €14m, involving 100,000 investors in the company’s bonds.

Produced by Francesca Cima and Nicola Giuliano of Indigo Film, with France’s Babe Films, Il Gioiellino (“The Little Jewel”) stars Toni Servillo, Remo Girone and Sarah Felberbaum. In the film, owner of a large dairy company in financial trouble and his right-hand man are obviously based on Parmalat founder and CEO Calisto Tanzi and Fausto Tonna, respectively.

Molaioni stresses that his film is not an investigative work à la Michael Moore: "We don’t call anyone guilty or innocent, we just try to tell a story through the eyes of the characters, with their defects, limits and passions. Without black and white explanations".

Il Gioiellino, which received €1.65m from the Ministry of Culture (MiBAC) as a film of cultural interest and €550,000 Eurimages, will be ready early next year.
