Final preparations are underway before shooting starts on June 28 on Bye Bye Blondie, the second feature by Virginie Despentes after Rape Me (which screened in competition at Locarno in 2000 and was the subject of a stormy debate over censorship).

The novelist is this time launching into a French/Swiss/Belgian co-production starring Emmanuelle Béart and Béatrice Dalle. The cast also includes Pascal Greggory (Return to the Dogs) and Soko (nominated for Best Female Newcomer Cesar 2010 for In the Beginning [+see also:

Adapted by the director from her eponymous novel, Bye Bye Blondie centres on two women. Gloria (Dalle) lives in Nancy. She has no job, no family life or fixed address. She spends her days at local rock bar the Royal, sipping glasses of beer.

Frances (Béart) lives in Paris. She is a star television presenter, married to a successful novelist. In their private life, Frances likes women and her husband likes men, but for their audience and ratings, they are a close couple.

When recording a programme in Nancy, Frances makes the most of the opportunity to meet up with Gloria. They haven’t seen each other since 1985, since their break-up, of what was Gloria’s first big love affair and first major heartbreak. But since then, life has continued. Will Frances and Gloria, who come from such different worlds, manage to reunite?

Produced by Cédric Walter and Sébastien de Fonséca for Red Star Cinéma, Bye Bye Blondie is co-produced by Switzerland’s Vega Film and Belgium’s Frakas Productions, and has been pre-bought by Canal + and Ciné Cinéma. Shooting will last eight weeks in Paris, Nancy and Liège.

Memento Films Distribution will release the film in French theatres, while international sales are being managed by Wild Bunch.
