AWARDS Italy

Winners multiplied at Nastri d’Argento

by

The 2010 Nastri d’Argento, presented June 19 in Taormina by the Italian National Film Journalists Union, was marked by shared awards. Whether it was two women for the same role (Best Actresses Stefania Sandrelli and Micaela Ramazzotti in The First Beautiful Thing [+see also:

) or two men for different films (Palme d’Or winner Elio Germano, for Our Life [+see also:

, and Christian De Sica for Pupi Avati’s Il Figlio Più Piccolo [+see also:

), many Nastri recipients took the stage of the Teatro Antico in the company of one or two more peers.

The goal behind the many ex-acqueo awards was probably to promote Italian cinema by singling out a growing number of titles and people. To do so, the films that would have left the competition in the dust were given Nastro of the Year nods (like Giuseppe Tornatore’s Baaría [+see also:

), and alongside the usual award for Best Film Director (Paolo Virzì for The First Beautiful Thing), as of this year there’s a new prize, for Best Comedy Film, won by Ferzan Ozpetek’s Loose Cannons [+see also:

.

The top winners were multiplied, and not only the films: Best Supporting Actress was shared by Lunetta Savino and Elena Sofia Ricci (both for Loose Cannons), as well as Isabella Ragonese, who received a “cumulative” prize for Our Life and One Life, Maybe Two [+see also:

. The same goes for Luca Zingaretti, Best Supporting Actor for Our Life and Il Figlio Più Piccolo, alongside Ennio Fantastichini for Loose Cannons.

There were five overall “ties”, rounded out by Best Debut Film (Valerio Mieli’s Ten Winters [+see also:

and Rocco Papaleo’s Basilicata Coast to Coast [+see also:

and Our Life).

For the rest, many predictions came true, with The First Beautiful Thing triumphing in the Best Screenplay (while Best Film Story went to Carlo Verdone’s Io, loro e Lara [+see also:

); Loose Cannons winning Best Cinematography and Song (“Sogno”, sung by Patty Pravo); Oscar winner Gabriella Pescucci winning Best Costume Design for The First Beautiful Thing (and Agorà [+see also:

).

Best Soundtrack went to Papaleo’s abovementioned musical; Simone Bachini and Giorgio Diritti walked away with Best Producers for The Man Who Will Come (the great “loser” of evening, if Best Sound and Production Design are excluded).

Best European Film went to Radu Mihaileanu’s The Concert [+see also:
