De Emmony will be Driving Over Lemons

British director Andy De Emmony, whose West Is West has been selected for the London and Toronto film festivals, is attached to direct Driving Over Lemons.

The film is a Spanish/UK co-production between Whistling Thorn Films and Jaleo Films, based on the eponymous best-selling book by Chris Stewart, adapted by Lucy Shuttleworth. The story is a comic account of Stewart’s adventures as he and his wife adapt to living in the rugged foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Alvaro Alonso will produce for Jaleo, and Lou Spain and Stephen Marsh will produce for Whistling Thorn, with principal photography expected to commence in summer 2011.

De Emmony started his career on Spitting Image, directing ten series of the BAFTA-nominated satirical show. He won an Emmy for Red Dwarf and a BAFTA for Father Ted. Other notable credits include Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee, the three-part adaptation of the novel by Meera Syal, and the series At Home with the Braithwaites, A Thing Called Love and 55 Degrees North. West Is West is his first feature.

After stints at Miramax, Natural Nylon and the UK Film Council, Shuttleworth became Head of Development for The Spice Factory, where she shepherded films like The Merchant of Venice [+see also:

was her adaptation, along with Graham Alborough, of children’s book, The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge.
