Oscilloscope believes in Jalmari’s Father Christmas

by

Jalmari Helander’s feature debut Rare-Exports: A Christmas Tale, which screened at Toronto’s Discovery sidebar last week, has been picked up for North American distribution by Oscilloscope Laboratories.

The head of the New York-based distribution company Adam Yauch said: "This is really a unique film. I'm tempted to say it's like the Coen brothers meets The Grinch Who Stole Christmas but Rare Exports is so original in its feel and approach that I'll refrain from such comparisons, and simply say – gas up your snowmobiles, load your shotguns and smoke 'em if you got 'em – 'cause we intend to un-cage this sucker in theatres for the holidays!"

The film had its world premiere at the last Locarno Film Festival where it won the Variety Piazza Grande Award. Its next major festival stop is the London Film Festival, where it will screen in Film on the Square. Oscilloscope plans to release it in US cinemas in December, just like FS Film in Finland.

Rare Exports was produced by Finland’s Cinet Film in co-production with Sweden Davaj Film, Norway's Pomor Film and France's Love Streams Agnès B. Productions. Paris-based Kinology is handling world sales.
