Hřebejk and Jarchovský in Oscar race again with Kawasaki's Rose

The Czech Republic is submitting Jan Hřebejk’s Kawasaki's Rose [+see also:

as its contender in the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Czech Film and Television Academy considered three films: Kawasaki's Rose, Tomaš Mašín’s 3 Seasons in Hell [+see also:

and Kooky [+see also:

Kawasaki's Rose tells the story of a renowned scientist and former dissident who is about to receive a national honor. The distinction sets into motion a number of events bringing to light his past, in which the communist state police coerced him into discrediting a former friend.

The film is the most recent collaboration between Hřebejk and screenwriter Petr Jarchovský, among whose many collaborations was 2001 Best Foreign Language Film nominee Divided We Fall. Jarchovský also wrote the screenplay for the Ondřej Trojan's Oscar-nominated Želary [+see also:

in 2004.

Kawasaki's Rose screened in the Panaroma selection at this year's Berlinale, where it received the CICAE award as well as Ecumenical Jury Prize. It also received the grand prize and the audience award at the Finale Plzen festival of Czech films earlier this year.

Kawasaki's Rose is produced by In Film Prahaand Infinity Prague with financial support from Czech State Fund for the Support and Development of Czech Cinematography. Bonton Film released the film to Czech theatres in January.
