Begg to sing Seven Songs for Amy

, it’s time for another Irish musical to attempt capturing global eyeballs. Director Konrad Begg, who scored a BAFTA Scotland nomination for television programme Robbie Coltrane’s B Road Britain, will direct rock and roll romantic comedy Seven Songs for Amy.

Based on a script by Fiona Graham, the film will follow a hapless Irish musician in Galway who writes an album for Amy, the girl he was supposed to marry, in order to try and win her back from a global pop star. His quirky band members prove to be both hindrance and help.

Casting is underway with a view to a July shoot with Patrick Bergin (Eva) and Gavin Mitchell (Man Dancin’) already attached. Graham Cantwell (Anton) will produce alongside Graham for Sonny and Skye Productions.

Sonny and Skye have lined up a roster of some of Ireland’s foremost emerging musicians for the original soundtrack, including Jim McKee, Ultan Conlon and Bergin. The company has set up a record label and have begun releasing singles from the soundtrack. “My Angel” (Malaika) is a traditional African folk song that Bergin has translated into English and recorded along with Irish chanteuse Eleanor Shanley. In addition, “The Drunken Sailor”, an old sea shanty rendered by Bergin also features amongst the songs.
