BOX OFFICE Netherlands

Dutch titles doing well at local wickets

by

January is traditionally a strong month for local productions, mainly because so many high-profile titles are released in December and play through January. But this year, February has continued the upbeat business for Dutch films, with some December releases still in the top twenty of most-visited films as well as several new releases making waves.

The absolute success story is New Kids Turbo [+see also:

(see news), which after 11 weeks on release has amassed an amazing €8.83m in box-office takings. The adaptation of a famous TV series has also been a sizeable hit in neighbouring Flanders for distributor Benelux Film Distributors (BFD) and producer Eyeworks.

Also very successful is the Dutch adaptation of Flemish thriller Loft (see news), directed by Antoinette Beumer. It currently stands at €3.36m after 10 weeks in release, the third highest-grossing title in the top twenty after Turbo and Disney title Rapunzel with €3.74m.

Still doing very well in its fourth week of release is Dutch historical romance Sonny Boy (see news), which currently stands at number four in the top 20, after several weeks on number one. Its box-office total stands at €2.16m, with enough potential to surpass Loft, seeing as how Sonny Boy is currently still playing on 113 screens for a very strong €2,438 average per screen. (For comparison: Loft now has an average of €993 per screen on 69 screens.)
