Kopps sets record

by (a.p.)

13/02/2003 - Released on 7 February, Joseph Fares’ latest comedy, Kopps, set a new opening attendance record for a domestic production, and was seen by over 100,000 filmgoers. Kopps, the follow-up to Fares’ Jalla Jalla, also scored as production company, Memfis Film & TV’s and their habitual distribution partners, Sonet Film’s best ever domestic opening.
“Although we have had quite a number of successful films over the years such as Colin Nutley’s House of Angels, Lukas Moodysson’s Fucking Åmal and Together, and Joseph Fares’ Jalla Jalla, this is by far our best opening weekend,” said Sonet Film.
Produced by Anna Anthony for Memfis Film with support from Film i Väst, the Swedish and Danish Film Institutes, the Nordisk Film & TV Fund and Zentropa Entertainment, this action comedy premiered at the last Göteborg Film Festival and had its international presentation in Rotterdam.
Kopps is about a local police station that is threatened with closure because there is simply too little local crime to justify its existence. The film stars Josef Fares’ brother, Fares Fares and Torkel Petersson, Sweden’s Shooting Star at this year’s Berlinale and the protagonist of a Danish hit entitled Old Men in New Cars [trailer]. Both actors also starred in Jalla Jalla, seen by over 747,000 Swedish filmgoers and the country’s top performing local film of 2001.
Zentropa’s sales arm, Trust Film Sales is handling the international sales of Kopps.
