Red Eagle swoops onto big screen

by Sergio Ríos Pérez

Red Eagle swoops onto big screen26/04/2011 - Despite the savage reviews it has received in the trade press, Red Eagle: The Film [trailer] has got off to an excellent start at the Spanish box office. During its first weekend on release, it claimed second position in the rankings with €1.17m in takings (178,656 viewers).

Helmed by José Ramón Ayerra, the film’s great appeal lies in the enormous popularity of the TV series on which it is based. Although many argue that the film is nothing more than an episode of the series with a slightly bigger budget (actually quite bigger, at nearly €6m) and theatrical distribution, it cannot be denied that it represents another step in the coming together of the big and small screen, one of the greatest exponents of which is Daniel Écija (who produced the film, and other hits like Brain Drain [trailer] and Chef’s Special [trailer]).

The film’s producers, Globomedia and Versátil Cinema, have announced that if the results are satisfactory there will be a second instalment. Ahead of any official confirmation, this certainly looks likely.
