Canet and Jappeloup: "Together, we’ll win"

by

Once upon a time, there was a little horse which had no chance of winning. Once upon a time, there was a horseman in search of the perfect riding horse. Once upon a time, a man and a horse whispered to each other: "Together, we’ll win". Last Thursday, shooting started in Cap-Ferret, in southwest France, on the biopic Jappeloup which will retrace the career of horseman Pierre Durand and his horse Jappeloup, who became Olympic show jumping champions in 1988.

Helmed by Quebec-born director Christian Duguay, the film boasts a cast including Guillaume Canet (currently appearing at Toronto in A Better Life) who also wrote the screenplay, Daniel Auteuil (who has just filmed The Lookout), Marina Hands (Of Women and Horses [+see also:

Eight horses will be used to re-enact the story of an extraordinary friendship between a man and a horse that was initially considered too small (1.58 m) to compete at the highest level. The world’s current show jumping elite will take part in the re-enacted scenes of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (1984) and Seoul (1988).

Jappeloup is produced by Pascal Judelewicz for Acajou Films. Its €21m budget includes co-production support from Pathé, TF1 Films Productions and Studio 37, as well as pre-acquisitions from Canal+ and Ciné+.

The shoot will last 14 weeks. Filming will continue from today in Dordogne (Brantôme, Périgueux, Pomport and Issigeac), then the team will relocate on October 1 to Fontainebleau in the Paris area before moving on to Spain (Seville and Palma in Majorca) and returning to Dordogne at the end of November. Pathé will release the film in France in January 2013 and is handling international sales.
