director Danny Boyle (pictured) is following a protracted production procedure for his current film Trance.

The thriller will complete principal photography in 2011 and the footage will be put away for several months while the director prepares for his biggest production thus far – the gala opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics of which he is the artistic director. Once the Olympics are done and dusted in August 2012, Boyle will edit the film with a view to a Spring 2013 release.

The film went through a turbulent casting process where initially Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson were being considered for the leads. The roles eventually went to James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel with Rosario Dawson being the main female lead.

Written by John Hodge (Trainspotting) and Joe Ahearne, who wrote and directed the eponymous 2001 television movie on which Boyle’s film is based, Trance is a thriller that centres on an art auction house employee, Simon, played by McAvoy. He engineers a heist to steal a famous painting with the help of a group of criminals led by Franck (Cassel). Things do not go according to plan as Simon gets knocked on the head and loses his memory. As Simon is the only one who knows the whereabouts of the stolen artwork, Franck forces him to visit a hypnotist in order to jog his memory. Soon, Franck smells a double cross. Dawson plays Elizabeth, a woman who has an unusual relationship with both men.
