Record number of domestic releases in 2012

by

More than 20 Romanian films are scheduled for domestic release in 2012, the biggest number since the '89 Revolution. Famous directors such as Cristian Mungiu [pictured] and Nae Caranfil will have to compete against a new wave of local comedies, in a trend slowly shifting from auteur films to audience-oriented releases.

There is no doubt that Provizoriu (Temporary), Mungiu's first feature after Palme d'Or winner 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days [+see also:

, is the most eagerly awaited title. It's currently shooting and has a chance to be part of this year's Cannes competition, with a domestic release following in autumn. Closer to the Moon, Caranfil's period drama with Vera Farmiga and Mark Strong, is also expected this year, as well as Bogdan Dreyer's Ipu - Convicted to Live, with Gerard Depardieu, Harvey Keitel and Laura Morante.

The first title to be domestically released is Ultimul corupt al Romaniei (Romania's Last Corrupt Man), Sergiu Nicolaescu's follow-up to Poker (the most successful Romanian film of 2010, with 24,000 admissions), in February. March will come with The Phantom Father, Lucian Georgescu's first feature with Marcel Iures and Mihaela Sarbu, and Radu Mihaileanu's France-Romania co-production The Source. Radu Jude's Everybody in Our Family will have its domestic release in the first days of April, after a world première in the Berlinale Forum sidebar, followed at the end of the month by Silviu Purcarete's first feature Somewhere in Palilula.

Tudor Giurgiu's Of Men and Snails will be first screened during the next Transylvania International Film Festival. Adrian Sitaru shot his third feature, Domestic, in November, which is due for release in 2012. The same is the case with Bogdan Mustata's Wolf, Paul Negoescu's 365 New Year's Eves and Gabriel Achim's Adalbert's Dream, all first features. Ceva bun de la viata, Venice Silver Lion winner Dan Pita's first film since 2005, may well be released in the second part of the year.

Two comedies produced by MediaPro Productions, The Bride Has Been Stolen and Ho Ho Ho 2 will aim to be the most popular domestic releases of 2012.
