Curaçao IFFR kicks off with Marley

- The first edition of the Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam got its official start yesterday evening on the Dutch Caribbean island

The first edition of the Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam got its official start yesterday evening on the Dutch Caribbean island. It is an offshoot of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), which held its 41st edition in the eponymous Dutch port city earlier this year.

The Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam opened with a screening of the documentary Marley, with British director Kevin Macdonald in attendance.

The Curaçao event is a four-day festival that will screen 27 feature films and 11 shorts. On top of that, the festival also includes free screenings for student groups, concerts by youth orchestras, special screenings for kids and families and a competition for local directors of short films.

Films screening in Curaçao include several titles that also screened in Rotterdam, such as Steve McQueen’s Shame [+see also:

and Audience Award winner Monsieur Lazhar from Philippe Falardeau.

Two of the three 2012 Tiger Award winners, Egg and Stone from China and De jueves a domingo from Chile, are also part of the program.

Director Catrien Ariëns will premiere her documentary film Nochi no ke laga mi bai (The Night Holds Me Back) at the event. The film looks at tambú, the traditional music of Curaçao, and was produced by Amsterdam-based outfit Corona Pictures.

The Curaçao IFFR was initiated Gregory Elias of the Curaçao-based Fundashon Bon Intenshon and is co-organised with IFFR.
