Four check-out girls become Les Reines du ring
by Fabien Lemercier
03/04/2012 - On Tuesday, April 9, six weeks of shooting will kick off for Reines du ring (lit. “Queens of the ring”), Jean-Marc Rudnicki’s first feature film about supermarket check-out girls who start up a catch wrestling team. In the cast will be Nathalie Baye (photo - soon to be seen in Laurence Anyways by Xavier Dolan), Marilou Berry (nominated in 2009 for a César for most promising actress in Ugly Melanie [trailer]), André Dussollier (recently seen in Unforgivable [trailer] and My Worst Nightmare [trailer]), Audrey Fleurot (Untouchable [trailer]), Corinne Masiero (Louise Wimmer [trailer] and soon in Rust & Bone by Jacques Audiard), and Isabelle Nanty (The Players [trailer]).
Written by the director with Clément Michel, Hélène le Gal (who wrote the original idea), Manon Dillys, and Marie Foucart-Pavlenko, the screenplay focuses on Rose (Marilou Berry), 25, who only has one idea in mind: to make up with Mickaël, her 11-year-old son from whom she has been seperated for a few years. But it is no easy task. When Rose discovers Mickaël’s passion, she thinks that she has found a way to break the ice. She is going to set up a catch wrestling team with her three check-out girl colleagues...
Produced by Antoine Rein and Fabrice Goldstein for Karé Productions, Les Reines du ring benefits from co-productions with La Petite Reine (main producer) and M6 Films, as well as pre-sales to Canal + and Ciné+. Filming will take 51 days and will finish in mid-June in the Ile-de-France and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Warner will be in charge of the film’s distribution in France.
Karé Productions, who successfully produced The Names of Love [trailer] and Ugly Melanie currently has The Dandelions by Carine Tardieu (read more) in post-production, a film that Gaumont will release on August 22.
