The Exam premieres at Karlovy Vary
by Fabien Lemercier
29/06/2012 - After first being discovered with Stop Mom Theresa! (two awards at Hungarian Film Week 2005), Hungarian director Péter Bergendy has been selected to take his latest film, The Exam (read more), to the East of the West section of the competition at the 47th Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which starts today. The film, set to make its international premiere at the Czech event, features Janos Kulka, Zsolt Nagy (photo), Gabriella Hamori, and Péter Scherer.
Produced by Unio Film, The Exam is a cross between a psychological drama and a spy film. The film is set one year after Budapest’s 1956 crushed uprising, when the Hungarian people are still living in fear. A young secret service agent has to undergo a loyalty test, while also facing challenges in his personal life.
Another Hungarian film will also feature as a special screening at the festival: The Door by István Szabó (read more here and here), a film co-produced with Germany starring Helen Mirren and Martina Gedeck.
Another co-production involving Hungary and Germany (as well as France) will also screen as part of the event’s Horizons programme: Just the Wind [trailer, film focus] by Bence Fliegauf (read the review), which won the Jury Grand Prix at the last Berlinale.
