- The European Council's co-production fund has chipped in €370,000 for Danish director Mikkel Nørgaard's The Keeper of Lost Causes, launching the Jussi Adler-Olsen franchise

Danish director Mikkel Nørgaard's The Keeper of Lost Causes (photo), which will launch Zentropa Entertainments' and commercial broadcaster TV2's €20.1 million Jussi Adler-Olsen series of (so far) five thrillers, has received €370,000 top finance from Eurimages, the European Council's co-production fund. Principal photography for the film began earlier this month (October 5).

Adler-Olsen's four novels about deputy detective superintendent Carl Mørck and his Department Q - for "cases of special focus" – have sold six million copies in 32 countries – 1.3 million in Denmark alone. On screen he will be played by Danish actor Nikolaj Lie Kaas, who won the Danish film critics' Bodil award for the lead in Martin P. Zandvliet's A Funny Man [+see also:

The Keeper of Lost Causes, which recently was awarded the Deadly Pleasures' Barry Prize for Best Novel at the Bouchercon Mystery Convention in Cleveland, USA, (October 4-7), follows Mørck's search for woman politician (Sonja Richter), who disappeared five years ago, now presumed dead. But she was in fact abducted and has since been imprisoned in an isolated pressure chamber.

Swedish actor Fares Fares has been cast as Mørck's side-kick, Hafez al Hassad, and Søren Pilmark as his superior, chief of homicide. Followed by The Pheasant Killers (2008), Message in a Bottle (2009) and Journal 64 (2010) and a fifth yet un-written title, the first package will be scripted by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair [+see also:
