GOLDEN GLOBES 2013

Love wins Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film

by

- 3 awards for Les Misérables. Argo by Ben Affleck honoured by both Best Drama and Best Director

The 70th Golden Globes ceremony was held last night in Beverly Hills. It was an opportunity for the Foreign Press Association in Hollywood to launch the American awards season at a major event which, for the industry, foreshadows the Oscars.

Television stars Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over from Ricky Gervais in presenting the show, giving the evening a much less scathing tone than those introduced by the British comedian during the previous three editions.

The highest prestige of the ceremony goes to Argo, which attributed the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama and Best Director to Ben Affleck, even though the British film Les Misérables by Tom Hooper won the numbers game, being the only film to carry off three Golden Globes.

European distinctions

In a comical moment, the Schwarzenegger/Stallone duo took charge of awarding the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film to Michael Haneke who came to shake hands with his compatriot and ex-Governor of California. Love was nominated in the European films category.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, British actor Daniel Day Lewis won the second Golden Globe of his career for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Lincoln , directed by Steven Spielberg.

Les Misérables won the Golden Globe for Best Musical, which was presented to one of its producers, Eric Fellner.

A European actor and an American actress in a European film shared the Golden Globes for supporting roles. After winning the same award for another movie by Quentin Tarantino in 2010, Austrian actor Christoph Waltz received his second award for his performance in Django Unchained (which also won the Best Screenplay Award), while Anne Hathaway was honoured for her musical performance in Les Misérables. Tom Hooper's film also won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a comedy or musical, awarded to Australian actor Hugh Jackman

British singer Adele took the prize for Skyfall, the original song from the film of the same name.
