Salvation shooting in South Africa with international cast and NFTF support

Danish Dogme director Kristian Levring has begun principal photography for Salvation - his "hommage to the classic western, inspired by the Nordic sagas" - on locations in Johannesburg, South Africa, where during the eight-week shoot Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen in the lead will be joined by an international cast including Douglas Henshall, Michael Raymond-James, Jonathan Pryce (UK), Eva Green, Eric Cantona (France), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (US) and Mikael Persbrandt (Sweden).

An "epic tale of revenge, lost love and greed," the €10.5 million, English-language Salvation is set in 1870s America, where an otherwise peaceful settler (Mikkelsen) kills the murderer of his family, thus unleashing the fury of his brother, a notorious gang leader. Scripted by Danish Oscar-winning writer Anders Thomas Jensen (In A Better World (2010)), it will be released in Denmark by Nordisk Film Distribution in October 2014; TrustNordisk handles international sales.

The Sisse Graum Jørgensen production for Zentropa Entertainments, with Spier Films (South Africa) and Forward Films (UK) has - among others - received production support from the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, which has shelled out €1.3 million for five Nordic features and four documentaries. Biggest cheque - €355,000 - was written for Norwegian Kon-Tiki [+see also:

directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning's adaption of Lars Saabye Christensen's Beatles, which will shoot from June for Norwegian producer Jørgen Storm Rosenberg. The €6.6 million depiction of four teenage boys growing up in Oslo during Beatlemania will premiere in February 2014.
