(photo) as the German submission for the Oscar of the Best Foreign Language Film, finding that it “portrays a strand of German history which is otherwise not very well known: the Norwegian “Lebensborn Children”. Two lives, to be released in Germany on September 19 (by Farbfilm) and in France at the beginning of 2014, is based on the true story of the German Kathrine Evensen (Juliane Köhler), who leads a happy life in Norway with her family and mother (Liv Ullmann), but is suddenly confronted, after the Berlin Wall comes down, with her secret Stasi past. To prevent the truth from being revealed, she has to return to her previous role.

Maas's film, produced by Zinnober Film, B&T Film and Helgeland Film (Norway), has screened at international festivals, including Bergen, Palm Springs, Göteborg, Seattle and Shanghai. Its world sales are managed by Beta Cinema (which so far has sold it not only to France, but also Israel and Poland).

The five nominees in the Best Foreign Film category will be announced by the Academy on January 16. The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2, 2014.
