When 50 international film journalists came to Copenhagen this week for a press junket prior to the world premiere of Danish director Lars von Trier’s new film Nymphomaniac [+see also:

, the key figure appeared for a few minutes at a photo call in Nyhavn, but without saying a word.

Surrounded by his lead characters – French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, UK actress newcomer Stacy Martin and Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, von Trier was photographed without loosening his self-imposed gag. “Lars does not talk to the press,” his publicist warded off questions from the journalists (December 4).

They were particularly interested to know whether it is true that he has not himself seen the two-part, four-hour cut by the film’s editor Molly Malene Stensgaard, which Nordisk Film Biografdistribution will launch in 26 Danish cinemas on December 25.

Von Trier has not made any official announcements since his October 5, 2011, press release, where he explained that “I have realised I do not possess the skills to express myself unequivocally and I have therefore decided from this day forth to refrain from all public statements and interviews.”

His decision followed the French police investigation of his proclamations at the press conference following the screening of his Melancholia [+see also:

in Cannes 2011, which the local prosecutor accused of violating French legislation against glorifying war crimes.

At the press junket organised by Danish production company Zentropa Entertainments and international sales company TrustNordisk, the journalists also attended a two-hour von Trier intro at the Danish Film Institute with, ao lecturer Peter Schepelern (author of a book about the director), and Nymphomaniac producer Louise Vesth.
