(aka Monica Z) – his biopic of Swedish legendary singer-actress Monica Zetterlund, which last year exceeded 520,000 admissions domestically to become the most popular Swedish film in 2013 – also received a top number of 11 nominations for the 50th Guldbagge award, Sweden’s national film prize, which will be announced on January 20 at a gala In Stockholm’s Cirkus.

Starring Swedish-Icelandic 29-year-old newcomer Edda Magnason, the Lena Rehnberg production for StellaNova Film, Waltz for Monica is among the contenders for, ao, Best Feature, Best Director (Fly), Best Actress (Magnason), Best Supporting Actor (Kjell Bergqvist, Sverrir Gudnason) and Best Cinematographer (Eric Kress).

Competing for Best Feature, Måns Mårlind-Björn Stein’s Shed No Tears and Anna Odell’s The Reunion [+see also:

have been nominated in nine and four categories, respectively. Also Lisa Langseth’s Hotell is running for four Guldbagge statuettes (created by Swedish artist Karl Axel Pehrson), which the Swedish Film Institute has now awarded since 1964.
