film profile]. Endowed with a considerable potential to appeal to young audiences, Hardkor Disko thrusts right to the heart of city life, an environment full of traps that lurk for teenagers who are looking to find their own paths through the world. 

“The word ‘hardkor’ is a word of our time, which came into everyday use in the Polish language in order to refer to something surprising and brutal, but also an enticing and appealing kind of danger,” explains the director, who is making his fiction-feature debut with this film. “As for ‘disko’, that’s a reference to the past, a slogan used by our parents’ generation, through which people feel a kind of nostalgia.”

Hardkor Disko tells the story of a young man (played by Marcin Kowalczyk) who becomes familiar with the world of a girl who is younger than him (Jaśmina Polak), which he gets ever more involved in: a world of hard drugs, illegal street races and never-ending parties. 

The film’s structure is based on a Greek tragedy in three acts, with each one including an introduction sung by a choir, a prologue and an exodus (final scene). “It’s the story of a desperate search for one’s identity, a tale of guilt, vengeance and punishment, as well as one of impossible love,” the director explains.

Well known for being a director and producer of music videos, a visual artist and an actor (for example, in In Darkness [+see also:

film profile] by Agnieszka Holland), Krzysztof Skonieczny produced Hardkor Disko completely independently with glebokiOFF, a production outfit created specifically for this purpose. The team’s slogan, unveiled for the film’s release, is: “We’re bringing you the bomb.” This particular bomb is distributed in theatres by Gutek Film.
