Within six hours of the box office opening for the 27th Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy, close to 20,000 tickets had been sold for this year’s programme of 170 features and 150 shorts – total sell-outs included the opening and closing movies, US directors Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, and UK directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s drama-documentary on Australian author-musician-artist and sometimes actor Nick Cave, 20,000 Days on Earth [+see also:

Starting today (18 September) and running through until 28 September, Finland’s largest showcase offers more than 500 screenings at 12 venues. For gala presentations, festival director Sara Norberg and her artistic director Pekka Lanerva have selected, among others, Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s Two Days, One Night [+see also:

. Thirteen local films will unspool in the Finnish focus.

Almost 40 international guests will attend the festival, toplined by 20-year-old US actor Ellar Coltrane from Linklater’s Boyhood, which was filmed over 12 years and recently received the international film critics’ FIPRESCI Grand Prix for Film of the Year. ) and Chilean actor Brontis Jodorowsky (from his grandfather’s The Dance of Reality) are also on the list.

Having signed a three-year agreement with Finnish pubcaster YLE, the festival will supply some of the programme for immediate local airing, including Polish director Agnieszka Holland’s feature/TV series Burning Bush [+see also:
