With a new National Film Center planned to begin its activities next year (see the news), Moldova will potentially have the chance to show off its significant directorial talent in the omnibus project How Far Is Europe?. It will be pitched at the Baltic Event co-production market of Tallinn’s Black Nights Film Festival (14-30 November) as the main attraction of a Focus on Moldova.

The omnibus takes advantage of Moldova’s difficult position between Romania/the European Union on one side, and the influence of Russia on the other. The clash between Eastern and Western values and realities is the main source of inspiration for the six short films directed by Pavel Cuzuioc (Raisa), Dorian Boguţă (Vera), Valeriu Andriuţă (Salix Caprea), Ion Sapdaru (Postcards from Home), Igor Cobileanski (Fossil) and Dumitru Grosei (Sunflower Oil). “From absurdly comical situations to drama inspired by real events, How Far Is Europe? is a necessary voice in the context of European cinema,” states the project’s presentation.

The omnibus is produced by Brio Film Production. Producers Dan Burlac, Igor Cobileanski and Pavel Cuzuioc, who are based in Romania, Moldova and Austria, will try to secure funding from their respective countries. Burlac told Cineuropa that the omnibus will be submitted for the next grant session of the Romanian National Film Center. The total budget is valued at approximately €300,000, and there are hopes that production will start next summer.
