Czech film critics reveal nominations for their annual awards

A good number of the Czech films of 2014 have been shortlisted for the fifth edition of the Czech Film Critics' Awards. These prizes were introduced in order to draw attention to the most interesting films from the point of view of a professional film critic and to provide another outlook on domestic production. In their relatively short lifespan, the Czech Film Critics' Awards have earned a great deal of respect and have started to serve as an alternative to the more firmly established Czech Lions. Having two annual film awards also enables critics to identify higher-quality films, such as Burning Bush [+see also:

, written and directed by actor/filmmaker Jiří Mádl, is nominated in the categories of Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor. Klaudia Dudová has already been awarded for her role in The Way Out and is now in the running for Discovery of the Year, along with Mádl for his directorial debut and Tomáš Pavlíček for his first feature film, the comedy Totally Talking [+see also:

by Andrea Sedláčková, which has been chosen as a contender for the Best Foreign-language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, landed four nominations: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress.

The omnibus film Gottland, based on the book by Polish journalist and writer Mariusz Szczygieł and consisting of short films by young documentary makers (Viera Čákanyová, Petr Hátle, Rozálie Kohoutová, Lukáš Kokeš and Klára Tasovská), is nominated for Best Documentary. The winner of the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, Into the Clouds We Gaze, and the biographical documentary The Magic Voice of a Rebel, about singer and Charter 77 spokesperson Marta Kubišová, are also competing for the award.

The winners will be announced on 24 January.
