During the first six months of 2015, Danish cinemas recorded nearly seven million admissions – approximately 20% more than during the same period last year. The Danish market share is 34.9% up from 2014 (when nine out of 13 local releases flopped significantly).

“We know from experience that the second part of the year sells more tickets at the theatres, so 15 million admissions for 2015 is still a realistic guess for the final result – it will eventually be the best in 34 years,” said chairman Kim Pedersen, of the Association of Danish Cinemas, which has published the statistics.

A total of 2.4 million viewers preferred local fare, and their choice placed nine Danish features on the top 25 list, including five in the top 10 – “An impressive performance, considering the strong US competition,” added Pedersen. The charts were topped by director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey (386,876 admissions) and James Wan’s Furious Seven/Fast and Furious 7 (370,786 admissions).

“Within the top 25, eight films are sequels, six are based on books, three on real-life events, and three are new versions of older films – only five are original stories written for the screen, and they are all Danish,” observed Pedersen, who highlighted Kasper Barfoed’s Summer of ’92 [+see also:
