CineStar enters Serbia

German multiplex chain CineStar has announced that it will open three sites in Serbia in 2016, all of them in the country’s northern region of Vojvodina.

By the end of 2015, the cities of Pančevo (population 76,000) and Zrenjanin (population 76,500) will each get a four-screen cinema, technically a miniplex. In the first quarter of 2016, Novi Sad, Serbia’s second-largest city, with 231,000 inhabitants, will have the biggest cinema in the country, a ten-screen multiplex.

This means that CineStar will operate a total of 17 multiplex sites in the region, incorporating 110 screens. It already has two sites (11 screens) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and 14 venues (81 screens) in Croatia, including an IMAX screen in Zagreb.

“Along with state-of-the-art technologies and supreme film content, we are bringing to Serbia the know-how that results from over 50 years of experience as a leading theatrical exhibitor, thanks to which millions of viewers who visit our sites every year have an unforgettable CineStar experience and get a truly unique feeling that always makes them come back,” says Zoran Savić, director of CineStar Cinemas in Serbia.

Meanwhile, Austrian chain Cineplexx has 15 venues in the region, with a total of 99 screens, including six in Slovenia (although not a single one in key city Ljubljana), three in each of Croatia and Serbia, and one in each of Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania.
