Ole Bornedal to direct comedy Small Town Killers

Danish director Ole Bornedal, who most recently made Danish pubcaster DR’s eight-episode historical drama 1864 (2014) and its feature spin-off (set for 2016), both for Copenhagen’s Miso Film, will continue his collaboration with the production company on Small Town Killers, a comedy that he has written himself.

With Ulrich Thomsen, Nicolas Bro, Lene Maria Christensen and Mia Lyhne in the leads, amidst a star-studded Danish cast also including Søren Malling, Birthe Neumann and Ole Thestrup, it will be produced by Miso’s Jonas Allen and Peter Bose, with 4Fiction, Nordisk Film and DR-TV.

Two Jutland artisans and friends are fed up with their lifeless marriages and dream of a sweet life on their own, so that they can enjoy all the black money they have saved up. But divorces are expensive. One day, while on a binge, they hire a Russian assassin to do away with their wives, but they have underestimated the women, and suddenly they are on the top of a hit list. 

“I haven’t directed a comedy since the television series Charlot and Charlotte ten years ago, and this is an attempt to make a black, popular and cross-border satire about something as common as sex, lack of sex, and love, lack of love,” Bornedal explained. 

Small Town Killers is a grotesque, violent, absurd, humorous and especially romantic feature, with a distinctive visual expression, and we hope the combination of black humour and quirky characters will be a hit with a wide Danish audience,” Allen added.

Bornedal’s otherwise latest directorial effort was the American horror-thriller Possession (2012), staged by US genre producer Sam Raimi, which went straight to number one on the US charts. His first local feature since Deliver Us from Evil [+see also:

(2009) will be premiered on 25 December 2016; Nordisk Film is responsible for the Scandinavian distribution, while Denmark’s TrustNordisk will deal with the international sales.
