The UK sends Under the Shadow to the Oscars

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has chosen British-Iranian director Babak Anvari’s Persian-language film Under the Shadow [+see also:

film profile] as the UK’s entry in the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign-language Film category. The horror-thriller follows a mother and daughter as they struggle to cope with the terrors of the post-revolution, war-torn Tehran of the 1980s and a mysterious evil begins to haunt their home. Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi and Bobby Naderi star.
The film premiered at Sundance in January and has since racked up global festival miles and a host of awards, including Best Actress – International Film at the Fantaspoa International Fantastic Film Festival for Rashidi, the Narrative Feature Competition Jury Prize at the Montclair Film Festival, the Narcisse Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival and the Jury's Choice Award at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
The UK’s Wigwam Films produced with the participation of Creativity Capital (UK), the Doha Film Institute (Qatar) and MENA Film (Jordan).
The Academy will announce the nominations on 24 January 2017.
