Danish director Fenar Ahmad, who was born in Czechoslovakia to Iraqi immigrant parents and came with them to Denmark in 1986, where he studied film at Copenhagen’s Super 16 School, has set his second feature – the action-drama Darkland [+see also:

– in the Danish capital’s criminal underworld.

Scripted by Ahmad and Adam August, Darkland follows Zaid, an immigrant now enjoying life as a successful heart surgeon with his pregnant girlfriend in an expensive Copenhagen apartment. One night, his brother Yasin knocks on his door, desperately asking for money, but he is flatly rejected. When he is found beaten to death soon afterwards, Zaid is overwhelmed by guilt, which gives way to anger: he becomes obsessed with finding the assailant, and as a masked avenger, he moves into the criminal underworld, forced towards an inevitable choice that could change his world.

Iraqi-born actor Dar Salim, who came to Denmark when he was seven (he has appeared in 20 Danish films and TV series, recently Tobias Lindholm’s Oscar-nominated A War [+see also:

, as well as season one of HBO’s Game of Thrones), plays the lead, with Stine Fischer Christensen as his girlfriend. The cast of the Jacob Jarek production for Profile Pictures – supported by the Danish Film Institute and backed by Danish pubcaster DR – includes Ali Sivandi, Jacob Lohmann, Roland Møller and Dulfi Al-Jabouri. Scanbox Entertainment will handle the local release on 19 January.

After his education at film school, Ahmad directed Megaheavy, which won the Danish Film Academy’s Robert Award for Best Short in 2010. The soundtrack for his feature debut, the youth-orientated rap-music film Flow [+see also:

, starring Danish rapper Kian Rosenberg Larsson (Gilli) in the lead, performed well and reached the top of the local charts.
