Germany sees admissions dwindle in the first quarter

- 2017 did not exactly get off to a flying start in German theatres, with a noticeable drop in both admissions and box-office takings

Germany sees admissions dwindle in the first quarter
Bibi & Tina: Perfect Pandemonium by Detlev Buck

The first quarter of 2017 in German cinemas failed to live up to expectations, as confirmed by the figures gathered by specialist magazine Blickpunkt, based on data collected by ComScore. Between 1 January and 31 March, 33,033,469 admissions were sold, generating €284,104,757 in takings, which represents a fall of 6.8% and 4.7%, respectively, compared to the 35,446,146 admissions and €297,983,696 grossed over the same period last year – and a drop of 12.4% and 6.6% if we compare it to the record figures of 2015. Interestingly, these results are nevertheless stronger than those from the first quarter of 2014 (31.7 million admissions, generating €256 million) and are higher than the 2013 score in terms of box-office takings (€272.8 million, despite the 34.2 million admissions purchased, as the average ticket price was lower).

The number of new films released in theatres in the first quarter, which is admittedly fairly high, remained steady: 149 titles hit screens between January and March, as against 151 in 2016 (and 122 in 2015). The upper echelons of the box office (in terms of takings) were dominated by US blockbusters: Fifty Shades Darker (Universal, 3.39 million admissions), Beauty and the Beast (Walt Disney, more than two million viewers), La La Land (Studiocanal, over 1.6 million tickets sold), Split (Universal, over 1.2 million) and Passengers by Morten Tyldum (Sony, over 1.2 million).

However, the movie in seventh place in that chart, the family film Bibi & Tina: Perfect Pandemonium by Detlev Buck, distributed by DCM, popped up in fourth place in terms of the number of admissions, with almost 1.5 million tickets sold. In terms of viewer numbers, the other titles in the German top five are: My Blind Date with Life [+see also:
