An adaptation by Jean Becker and Jean-Christophe Rufin of the book of the same name by the latter, the screenplay (which friend Jean-Loup Dabadie also had a hand in) is set in a small town brought to its knees by the summer heat of 1919. A war hero is being held prisoner in a deserted barracks. In front of his door, his scruffy dog barks day and night. Not far from there, in the countryside, a young woman, weary from working the land yet too well-educated to be a simple peasant, waits and hopes. The judge who arrives to sort out this case is an aristocrat whose principles have been wobbled by the war. Three characters and a dog, who holds the key to the entire plot…

Produced by Louis Becker and Claire Maillard for Ice3, The Red Collar is being co-produced by KJB and France 3 Cinéma. Also pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the film is notably being supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and the department of Charente. Filming kicked off on 23 May in the Paris region and moved to Charente on 12 June. The film will be released in France by La Belle Company, whilst international sales are being handled by France TV Distribution.
