MIFED 2003 UK

250 digital screens by 2005

During an international workshop held at MIFED in Milan, digital projection has been presented as an excellent way to fight piracy and to save on print costs, while still maintaining the high quality of screening offered by 35mm.

Europe is leading the way in this field: Steve Perrin, Deputy Head of the UK Film Council’s Distribution and Exhibition Fund said that the organisation is currently developing a Digital Screen Network with private investors, to create single and multiple screens to be ready before 2005.
At the same time, thanks to support from the EU, the French company SDN is installing digital projection in 20 European cinemas, which will screen feature films supported by Eurimages from the Council of Europe.
For its part, Italy provides one of the best film digital mastering facilities in the world at Cinecitta Studios, while the European Space Agency is working with various partners (including the Italian Elsacom) on a project to distribute films via satellite.
