MAKING OF Taxidermia

The shooting of the European coproduction Taxidermia (involving Hungary, France, and Austria), György Palfy’s second feature, covering several seasons, will be over this Spring. It started in May 2004 in Hungary and will be completed next month in Austria, which means the film should be ready at the end of the year. The script of Taxidermia, written by the Magyar director and Szofia Ruttkay, is in fact an adaptation from a novel by Lajos Parti-Nagy, one of the best contemporary Hungarian writers. It is the story of three men, a grand-father, a father, and a son, during the second half of the 20th Century. The youngest character is also the narrator ; thus, this family saga allows us to explore 50 years of the Hungarian history from a subjective point of view, mixing facts and imaginary details, which creates what the 30-year-old director himself calls a fairytale reality. The cast includes Zoltán Koppány, Gergely Trócsányi, Adél Stanczel, István Hunyadkürthy, and Iván Dengyel.

This €2M-budget movie is produced by EuroFilm Studio (Hungary) for 50 %, by Memento Films (France) for 25 %, and by Amour Fou Filmproduktion (Austria) for 25 %. Taxidermia also received 200,000 euros from the European fund Eurimages, as well as the support of Arte France Cinéma, not to mention the prize won at the Sundance Film Festival. The reason why the film got so much support from all these different sources is that György Palfy proved very talented with his first film Hic (from crime to crime) which won several prizes such as European Discovery at the 2002 European Film Awards en 2002, and a special distinction as Best young director in San Sebastian.
