SHOOTING Netherlands

Into the deep end with Diep

by

Diep (Deep), the filmmaking debut of Dutch TV director Simone van Dusseldorp is currently in its fourth week of shooting in the Netherlands. Diep was written by Tamara Bos (Verborgen gebreken/Hidden flaws) and is based on the 2001 novel Het leven bestaat niet (Life does not exist) by Hendrickje Spoor.

Diep tells the story of 14-year-old Helleen, who grows up at the end of the 1970s. Her parents are in a messy divorce while she shyly adventures herself into the unknown territories of love, sexuality and friendship. These explorations are accompanied by conflicting and confusing feelings, which sometimes give Heleen the impression she is a kamikaze pilot going into the deep end.

Helleen will be played by Melody Klaver, who makes her feature debut on the film as well. Her mother will be played by Monic Hendrickx, the triple Dutch filmprize for best actress winner. Her father will be played by Bart Klever, whilst Damien Hope, Stijn Koomen, Hadewich Minis, Michel van Dousselaere and Marcel Faber complete the cast.

Van Dusseldorp has also assembled an able crew behind the cameras, consisting of cinematographer Ton Peters, art director Ben Zuydwijk, editor Peter Alderliesten and composer David van der Heijden. Diep will find its way to the Dutch cinemas in the spring of next year; it will be distributed by 1 More Film. The project is produced by Marc Bary through his Amsterdam-based IJswater Films. Diep is part of the feature film plan 'De oversteek' (The crossing), an initiative of the Dutch Film Fund, public broadcaster VPRO, CoBO-fund and the Stimuleringsfonds. The project entails the production of four feature length films and was of to a good start when the first of the 'De oversteek' projects, Guernsey, was selected for the 'Director's fortnight' at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
