European co-productions get recognition

European involvement in international productions was recognised yesterday at the Un Certain Regard awards ceremony of the 59th Cannes Film Festival.

The Grand Prize, awarded by jury president Monte Hellman, went to Luxury car by China’s Wang Chao, a 50% production by France’s Rosem Films, backed by Arte France Cinéma and sold internationally by Celluloid Dreams.

The Special Jury Prize, given to Ten Canoes by Australia’s Rolf De Heer, was in keeping with the ongoing search for international talent by European professionals as the feature – which is being sold by Wild Bunch – was produced by Fandango Australia, set up by Italian producer Domenico Procacci.

This year’s Jury President Prize went to Murderers [+see also:

by French director Patrick Grandperret (see review), produced by Sylvie Pialat for Les Films du Worso, and also being sold by Wild Bunch.

The Best Actor award was shared by an actress and actor this year: Dorothea Petre for The Way I Spent the Rest of the World [+see also:

by Romania’s Catalin Mitulescu, co-produced by French outfit Films Pellés and sold by Pyramide (see article); and Don Angel Tavira for El violin by Mexican filmmaker Francisco Vargas, which is being sold by Memento Films.
