Iglesias wins top music prize

Specialised in film scores, the Flanders International Film Festival Ghent (see news) each year awards the work of music composers.

This year, Alberto Iglesias was announced the grand winner at the sixth edition of the World Soundtrack Awards, presented on Saturday by the World Soundtrack Academy, an association of over 250 film music composers. The Spanish composer took two top awards – Best Composer and Best Original Soundtrack – for the music he wrote for Fernando Meirelles’ The Constant Gardener [+see also:

A regular composer for two great Spanish directors, Julio Medem and Pedro Almodóvar, Iglesias has also worked with Carlos Saura, Bigas Lunas and Pedro Costa. In recent years, he has been a regular winner at the Goyas, and his score for The Dancer Upstairs, the debut feature by US actor John Malkovich, won him the Nino Rota Award at the 2002 Venice Film Festival.

An Academy award nominee earlier this year as Best Composer for Meirelles’ film, Iglesias could well be nominated in the same category again next year for Volver [+see also:

Argentina’s Gustavo Santaolalla won the Public Choice Award for the soundtrack of Brokeback Mountain, for which he won an Oscar this year, while the Discovery Award went to Greek composer Evanthia Reboutsika for the soundtrack of My Father & My Son (Babam Ve Oglum), a Turkish film by Cagam Irmak.

Winner at the competition organised by the Ghent Film Festival in collaboration with the SABAM and the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique for the fifth year running, Alexis Koustoulidis received the title of Best Young Belgian Composer for his score on a silent short from 1907, Le Fauteuil Vivant (lit. “The Sleeping Armchair”).

Best Original Song was awarded to Our Town from Cars, performed by James Taylor and composed by the great and caustic wit Randy Newman.
