by Giacomo Battiato with 1.3m admissions in five weeks is still the most popular title at the Polish box office (Studio InterFilm, 141 screens).

In second place with 648,000 admissions is Open Season by Jill Culton and Anthony Stacchi (UIP, 100 screens), which exceptionally hogged the box office number one spot on its opening weekend on October 13.

However, it is not the results that are most astonishing, but rather the support for local productions. In 2006, the 200,000 admissions mark has been exceeded by seven Polish films, which, in contrast to previous years, is a noteworthy feat.

Following the spectacular success of romantic comedies released at the beginning of the year (1.6m admissions for 70 prints of Tylko mnie kochaj by Ryszard Zatorski, released by Studio Interfilm/ITI Cinema, and 1.2m admissions on 113 screens for Denis Delic’s Ja Wam pokażę, distributed by Forum Film), this trend has made a comeback in recent weeks.

– a melodramatic story by Witold Adamek based on the bestseller by Janusz Leon Wiśniewski and released through Kino Świat on 118 screens – attracted 133,000 film-goers in its first weekend after its release on September 15 and over 500,000 in total.

Another unexpected hit was Extras by producer-turned-director, Michał Kwieciński (see news). Released through ITI Cinema on 62 screens, it beat off all competitors on October 27, including Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Kwieciński’s title garnered 38,000 admissions in its opening weekend and 91,600 to date.

The same can be said for the third top-grossing title, Job, czyli ostatnia szara komórka, the latest film by Konrad Niewolski (Symetria, Palimpsest). Released on November 3 through Monolith on 62 screens, the film clocked up 55,400 admissions in its first weekend and 125,000 in ten days.
