Novkovic wins at Cottbus

The 16th Cottbus Festival of East European Cinema ended on Saturday, awarding a total of prizes worth €56,500.

The event – which screened 100 films from 23 countries (see news) and was attended by 16,000 visitors – gave its top prize to Tomorrow Morning (Sutra Ujutru) by Oleg Novkovic (Serbia & Montenegro). The film depicts the nostalgia and disillusion of a group of thirtysomethings when a friend living in Canada returns to Belgrade.

In addition to winning Best Film, Tomorrow Morning swept up the From Cottbus to Cinema Award, a distribution support prize, and the FIPRESCI Prize.

Best Director went to Romania’s Radu Muntean for The Paper Will Be Blue while the ensemble cast in his fellow Romanian director Corneliu Porumboiu’s film, 12:08: East of Bucharest [+see also:

, won the Special Prize for an Outstanding Artistic Contribution. Romanian shorts also did well, with Best Short going to The Tube With A Hat (Lampa Cu Caciula) by Radu Jude.

The Audience Award went to the European co-production The Wedding Chest by Nurbek Egen (Russia/Kyrgyzstan/France/Germany).
