Kocsis, Mészáros and Szaladják on show in Rotterdam
by Fabien Lemercier
22/01/2007 - Three Hungarian films – Fresh Air [trailer] by Agnes Kocsis, Kythera by Péter Mészáros and Bird Saviour, Clouds and Wind [trailer] by István Szaladják – will compete in the Cinema of the World: Time & Tide sidebar at the 36th Rotterdam International Film Festival, which begins next Wednesday.
Hungary will once again be showing the vitality of its young generation, as the Dutch event has selected two debut features and a second feature by directors who picked up prizes at major international festivals.
Kocsis’ Fresh Air, a KMH production sold by French outfit F for Film, was among the prize-winners at the 2006 Cannes’ Critics’ Week (see article and interview with director in Special Report: Hungarian blitz on the Croisette).
Meanwhile, Mészáros’ Kythera (Palme d’Or for Best Short at Cannes 2002) – produced by Mediawave 2000 and sold internationally by Profil-M 94 – screened at Locarno in the Filmmakers of the Present section (see article) and will be presented at the upcoming Hungarian Film Week (January 30-February 6) in Budapest.
Completing the line-up is Szaladják’s Bird Saviour, Clouds and Wind (see news). The Filmteam/Inforg Studio production – the latter are also handling world sales – marks the directorial debut of a DoP who previously worked on Szabolcs Hajdu’s Tamara and Tibor Szemzo’s Csoma’s Legendry.
